Cousland Village

Cousland Local History Project

The Cousland Local History Project (CLHP) was set up in April 1999 with the aim of studying the history of the village and surrounding area by the collection of written, visual and oral material and the archiving of items collected for the village.

Cousland Village HallThe group held a very successful exhibition in conjunction with national Local History week in 2000. Following this, they have built up a collection of over 1400 photographs, documents and artefacts, mostly donated by locals inspired by the exhibition.

Oral history recording, image collection and research continue throughout the year but recent special projects include geophysical surveying of Cousland Castle and Nunnery, research in The National Archives and investigation into the existence of Cousland Pottery in the 1700's.

Saturday 1st December will be the final meeting of 2007.

The Big Cousland Dig Part 1

Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November saw the first round of the Cousland BIG DIG. Around 300 years ago, a pottery was set up in Cousland, producing ceramics for the east of Scotland. It is supposed to be one of the first in this part of country - but no one knew where it was. With the help of expert archaeologists and technology villagers were invited to get hands dirty and discover their own 'finds' and contributed to the history of Cousland. There will be future work with this project in spring 2008 - watch out for details. For further information contact Sheena on 663 2730.
